Career history
Mister F.H.H. (Frans) Weekers MP was born on 17 October 1967 in the city of Weert in the Netherlands.
After finishing high school Frans Weekers studied financial economics and Dutch law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In 1992 he graduated at Master’s level in economics, one year later he completed his Master’s degree in law.
From 1993 to 1994 Weekers was affiliated with an insurance company. In the same period he worked as the political assistant to a Member of the Dutch parliament.
In 1994 Weekers switched careers and took on a position at the Bar. As a lawyer and attorney he worked with Hoeberechts law firm in Weert until 1998. Frans Weekers was also a member of the Weert municipal council from 1994 to 2003. During that period he served as president of the local liberal party.
From 1998 to 2002 Weekers was a member of the Lower House of the Dutch national parliament for the liberal party VVD. He served as spokesman in the areas of Social Affairs, Public Health, Justice and Finance. Since 2002 he has been on the Supervisory Board of Sint Jans Hospital and until 2006 also for the Land van Horne Foundation, a health care provider in the province of Limburg.
In 2003 Weekers returned as a lawyer and attorney at Hoeberechts law firm in Weert. Concurrently, he became president of the Limburger association of independent entrepreneurs, a position which he resigned from at the beginning of 2007.
At the 2003 national Lower House elections Weekers was again elected into parliament as a member of the VVD. After having initially taken on the Social Affairs portfolio, he became spokesman for Justice, security and counter-terrorism issues in 2005. At the end of 2006 he became Finance spokesman for the liberal party. Besides his work in parliament, Frans Weekers is currently president of the Justice and Public Order committee in the BENELUX-parliament and president of the Dutch delegation. At the beginning of 2007 he was appointed member to the Council of Europe and the Western European Union. Additionally he once again became a member of the municipal council of Weert in 2008. |
